The habit that changed my life started at two minutes.
Not two hours. Not some heroic, all-in transformation you’d put in a highlight reel. Two minutes of holding a plank on my basement floor, shaking, wondering what the point even was. But I did it again the next day. And the next. Two minutes became three. Three became ten. Ten became thirty. A few years later I was holding a plank for 45 minutes and ranked among the top in the world.
I didn’t get there with intensity. I got there with consistency — one small rep, stacked on the one before it, on a day nobody was watching. That’s the secret hiding under every life that changes: it’s rarely the big dramatic moves. It’s the small habits, repeated so many times they stop being things you do and start being who you are.
Here are 7 of them. But before you read, one rule: you’re not starting all seven. You’re picking one. Small habits win, and they only win if you actually keep them.
1. Win the morning. How you start the day sets the trajectory of the whole thing. My 3:45 am alarm isn’t about being extreme — it’s about getting the first hour before the world starts making demands. Win that hour with intention and you walk into the rest of the day already ahead. Lose it to the phone and you spend the day catching up.
2. Move your body — every single day. You don’t need a perfect program. You need a promise you keep. Movement is a Power-Up for everything else: your energy, your mood, your focus, your confidence. The plank taught me that the size of the workout matters far less than the fact that you showed up for it again.
3. Feed your mind before the world feeds it to you. Whatever gets into your head first tends to run the show. So get there first. A few pages of something good, a gratitude list, an affirmation spoken out loud — “I am…” not “I hope to…” You’re not just consuming information; you’re choosing the voice that narrates your day.
4. Write it down. Clarity lives on paper. A quick brain dump, your Clear Vision, your GOALZ, the one thing that matters most today. The pen is where the fog meets a flashlight — and where the future stops being a wish and becomes a plan you can actually follow.
5. Take one Incremental Action toward your vision. Every day, do one small thing that moves you toward Joey 2.0 — your version. One email, one paragraph, one call, one rep. It feels too small to matter. That’s exactly why it works. Small, repeated, on the boring days — that’s how the compounding starts.
6. Never miss twice. You will have off days. Everyone does. The habit isn’t about a perfect streak — it’s about the comeback. Miss once, fine, you’re human. Just don’t miss twice. One skip is a blip; two is the start of a new, worse pattern. Always get back the very next day.
7. Anchor the day in faith and gratitude. This is the one that holds all the others together. Start and end the day grounded — a moment of prayer, a few things you’re thankful for, a breath to remember you’re not carrying it all alone. Gratitude turns what you have into enough, and faith reminds you Whose you are before you chase what you’re becoming.
The common thread
Notice what these all have in common: not one of them is big. They’re small enough to feel almost pointless — which is exactly why they work. Consistency beats intensity, every time. The person who does the small thing for a year quietly laps the person who does the huge thing for a week and burns out.
Your life doesn’t change on the day you decide. It changes on the hundredth day you keep the promise you made when you decided.
🎯 Practical Tip
Pick one habit from this list — just one. Shrink it down until it’s almost too easy to skip: two minutes of movement, one page, one line of gratitude. Then stack it onto something you already do every day (“after I pour my coffee, I write one line”). Run it for 30 days without chasing perfect — just never miss twice. One small habit, kept, will teach you more about changing your life than any grand plan ever will.
Don’t start seven. Start one.
