Last week, the US Olympic Hockey Team didn’t just win Olympic gold — they showed us what belief under pressure looks like and what a dream or vision realized looks like.
- A massive save by US goalie, Connor Hellebuyck.
- A missed open net that could’ve flipped everything.
- Jack Hughes loses two teeth … and then scores the game-winner in overtime.
That’s not luck.
That’s preparation meeting resilience.
I was fortunate to have a similar experience, just not at the Olympic level. I did play collegiate ice hockey however this experience was when I was playing for the 14U Connecticut State Championship.
I don’t know what it’s like scoring the game-winning goal in overtime at the Olympic level, but I was fortunate to score the game-winning goal in overtime to help Enfield, CT win the 14U Connecticut Ice Hockey State Championship in 1989.
I may have mentioned it in a previous article, but the moment I was about to receive the pass from my teammate, everything went quiet and all I remember was moments before I put my stick in place to receive the pass. After that moment it was all “muscle memory.”
From all the early mornings, practicing at 4:30a, to visualizing scoring the game-winning goal in my basement. Passing the puck to myself, banking the puck off the concreate cement wall, to then one-time the shot into the goal; all the practice, all the visualization, and dreaming about that possibility of scoring that goal, prepared me for this moment! (watch video clip)
And then yesterday … I saw it again.
My son’s 14U Seahawks football team (6-2) faced the undefeated Packers (8-0) who were rolling into the Championship game very confident with a season average of 37pts. / per game.
After 48 minutes, we were deadlocked, 0-0. An incredible defensive battle!
Every snap mattered.
Then the moment came. In overtime, we went for the 2-point conversion.
Game on the line.
And we punched it in.
Upset complete!
Here’s what both games reminded me of …
The Lesson
Pressure doesn’t build character, it reveals it!
Championship moments aren’t created in overtime …
They’re built in:
- Practice
- Early mornings
- Tough losses
- Extra reps
- Quiet belief
The Olympic or local ice rink and a 14U football field may look different …
But belief, preparation, and resilience travel anywhere.
Dreams aren’t random.
They’re rehearsed.
What This Means For You
Your “overtime moment” is coming.
It might not look like a gold medal.
It might not be a 2-point conversion.
It might be:
- A hard conversation
- A business decision
- A health breakthrough
- A leadership opportunity
The question isn’t if pressure will come.
The question is:
Are you building the mindset now?
Practical Reset
This week, ask yourself:
- Where am I practicing for something bigger than today?
- Am I building belief daily — or waiting for confidence to magically appear?
- What small rep can I win today?
Small wins compound.
Belief compounds.
Preparation compounds.
And one day — when the moment comes — it will look effortless.
But you’ll know it was built, over time, rep after rep.
Keep building.
Keep believing.
Your dream isn’t far away.
