When Napoleon Hill wrote Think and Grow Rich, he called desire “the starting point of all achievement.”
“Every breakthrough begins with a burning desire.”
He was right — but here’s the twist: in today’s world, desire isn’t just about wanting something. It’s about being willing to become someone.
Every transformation in my life — every win, every new level — began the moment I got crystal clear on what I truly desired, not what others expected of me.
In a few short weeks I will turn 50 (or how I reframe it, Level 50). You see, when thinking of it as a game, reaching level 50 is an achievement. Think of the mastery and all the lessons it took to reach level 50 and the wisdom gained throughout the journey.
Since setting annual goals, I have found more excitement (or less anxiety) with each birthday as there are goals that I’m chasing after, whether they are physical, relational, spiritual, or financial. Setting goals and striving toward them have been the most rewarding, keeping me from getting stuck, etc.
“I don’t know anyone who made it to level 50 on one quarter.”
This mindset allows me to release anything I considered a setback or mistake from the past and reframe it as a necessary obstacle to help me obtain the knowledge and understanding I need to reach the next level.
That being said, one of my goals for 2026 is to publish my second, book. One of my 2025 goals was to start that book (check ✅ ). Although I’m still months away, I thought I would share a few excerpts from the first chapter. It sets the tone for the entire book. This is my encouragement to just start — set one goal, then take one action in the direction of that goal. Then take another action. Rinse. Repeat.
Below is Chapter One of my upcoming book, I hope you enjoy …
Chapter One:
Desire — The Starting Point of All Growth
Desire is what pulled me out of comfort zones, careers, and even states. It’s what took me from corporate “stability” to purpose-driven uncertainty. It’s what made me trade a title for a calling.
And if I’m being real — it’s what made me build this Level Up Mindset movement.
The Moment It All Shifted
I remember the morning I realized that what I had wasn’t what I wanted.
I knew I had a good job, good salary, respected role, solid benefits — and yet I felt numb. On paper, I was winning. But inside, I was restless.
That’s the thing about desire: it doesn’t whisper politely. It grows louder until you can’t ignore it anymore.
It was as if something inside me said,
“You’ve built someone else’s dream (their Plan A) long enough. It’s time to build your own dream, and turn your Plan B, into your Plan A.”
That single thought — that spark of desire — lit a fire that’s been burning ever since.
Desire is Spiritual
Let’s make this clear: desire isn’t greed.
Desire is divine direction.
It’s the nudge God places in your heart to remind you that you’re meant for more. That inner pull isn’t random — it’s guidance.
Philippians 2:13 says,
“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.”
That means your desires — the ones aligned with growth, impact, and purpose — aren’t just from you, they’re from Him.
So when you feel that tug to create, to lead, to build, to serve — that’s not selfish. That’s sacred.
Desire + Decision = Destiny
Here’s the formula:
Desire without decision is just daydreaming.
Desire with decision becomes destiny.
When I left the security of my 9-to-5, it wasn’t because I had all the answers. It was because I had clarity. I knew the life I wanted — to coach, to write, to build, to help people rewire their thinking — wasn’t going to come from waiting for permission.
It came from desire in motion.
That’s what separates dreamers from doers.
Dreamers wait for the perfect time.
Doers create it.
Desire and the Mindset of the Athlete
As a former athlete, I learned early that desire is what gets you up before sunrise. It’s what drives you to train when no one’s watching. It’s what pushes you past your limits — not because it’s easy, but because something in you refuses to quit.
Desire is what makes you hungry.
And hunger, when focused, becomes fuel.
If you’ve ever played a sport, you know this: talent might get you started, but desire keeps you in the game.
In mindset work, it’s no different. The person who desires growth will outlast the one who simply “wants results.” Because one is wishing, the other is willing.
The Neuroscience of Desire
Let’s bridge science and spirit for a second.
Desire activates the reticular activating system (RAS) — the part of your brain that filters what you notice and pursue.
Once you fix your mind on a goal with emotional intensity, your brain literally starts scanning your environment for opportunities that align with that goal.
This is why clarity is everything.
Without a clear desire, your brain doesn’t know what to look for.
When you decide exactly what you want, your subconscious goes to work behind the scenes — aligning thoughts, people, and circumstances to move you toward it.
It’s not magic. It’s mindset.
It’s how God wired the brain to respond to faith.
The Fuel of Faith
Desire without faith burns out.
Faith without desire stalls out.
When you combine the two — desire and faith — you activate a supernatural flow. You begin to operate from conviction, not convenience. You stop saying, “If it happens,” and start declaring, “When it happens.”
That’s when doors start opening. Not because you’re lucky, but because you’re aligned.
You’re walking in rhythm with purpose.
From Wanting to Willing
Everyone wants to be successful.
Few are willing to become the person success requires.
Desire means being willing — willing to fail, willing to grow, willing to stay consistent when it’s not glamorous.
When you say, “I desire transformation,” you’re saying, “I’m ready to do whatever it takes.”
That’s where growth happens.
The Power of a Goal
In one of my Weekly Mindset posts, I wrote:
“The power of a goal isn’t in achieving it — it’s in who you become while pursuing it.”
Desire gives you the why.
Goals give you the what.
Habits give you the how.
When all three align, you start moving differently. You start living intentionally. You stop drifting and start directing.
That’s when you step out of autopilot and into authorship — you’re no longer reacting to life, you’re writing it.
Practical Application: The Desire Declaration Exercise
Grab a journal and write your answers to these prompts:
- What do I truly desire — spiritually, mentally, physically, financially, and relationally?
- Why does this desire matter to me right now?
- Who do I need to become to sustain it?
- What one action can I take this week to move closer to it?
Now, condense those answers into one clear statement:
“I desire ___ because ___. Starting today, I will become the person who makes it real.”
Read it every morning and every night.
Feel it.
See it.
Act on it.
Because desire without emotion fades — but desire with belief transforms.
Final Word: The Spark That Starts the Fire
Every transformation story — whether in business, health, faith, or mindset — begins with someone who wanted more.
You’re not reading this by accident.
You were drawn to these words because something inside you knows there’s another level waiting.
Desire is that inner whisper saying, “It’s time.”
So fan that flame.
Nurture it.
Protect it.
And let it burn so bright that hesitation has no place left to hide.
Because once you have a burning desire — fueled by faith, guided by clarity, and backed by daily action — there’s no limit to how high you can go.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4
