Obsessed with your goals and vision!

As I sat between my three children watching the Stanley Cup Finals this spring packing our bags from an incredible 7-day vacation in Florida, my wife and I found ourselves at a crossroads in our lives.

The first half of our trip was spent at Universal Studios for 4 days. It was our first vacation with our three children where we had to take a plane. Our kids had a lot of anxiety leading up to the trip. Rightfully so since they had never flown before and didn’t know what to expect. The fear of the unknown is always difficult.

Most of us have all been there before. We fear what we do not know.

The second half of the trip involved taking a drive 2 hours North to St. Augustine where we rented a condo on the beach for a slower paced end to the week.

What an amazing place. St. Augustine is known for being the Oldest City in the United States. It’s like a moment frozen in time. The pace is much slower yet purposeful. No one is in a rush to get anywhere. Probably because there is no better place to be, then right where they are.

Over the past couple of years, my wife has been battling an autoimmune issue and the warm weather and sun had such and immediate impact on her health while on this trip. Living up North, the winters are long, cold, wet and grey. This year was even longer. To give you an idea, driving back from upstate New York on Mother’s Day it actually snowed. Yes, in the middle of May.

Although we were only there for seven days, my wife’s symptoms seemed to improve. The winters took their toll on her over the last three years. I thought I was pretty strong but after watching what my wife has endured, she is a true super hero!!

She could’ve complained about how she was feeling or made excuses to give up or lay in bed all day, but that’s not in her DNA.

My wife and I have quickly come to realize that life is too short. I never thought we would ever consider uprooting our lives including our three children, who are 12, 10, and 8.

But sometimes God has bigger plans.

After being in St Augustine, we knew, it was time to make a change. Obviously fear, anxiety, worry and doubt set in. How will our kids do with the transition, what about jobs, friends, etc?

Yet, sometimes you need to take a leap of faith and just JUMP!! … and that is exactly what we did.

We reached out to a local realtor in Saint Augustine (Matt) and let him know our situation. After that, God started to put the right people (including Matt) in our path to make this transition possible. As we were looking into homes in a particular neighborhood, Matt ran into someone he sold a house to, along with a group of women with their younger children, whom he introduced us to. They explained how moving to St. Augustine was the best decision they ever made and went into all the details we needed to hear.

Every night, my wife and I ,as well as our children, prayed together for clarity to make the right decision. We believed if this was the plan for us that God would make a way. And He did!

Of course it did not come without it’s challenges. Although all the right things began to fall in place, we ran into some major obstacles when it came to actually closing on the house. So issues were so major that we actually walked away from the closing despite our possessions being in their way, including our cars that were in transit to our new home. Panic and fear set in. We stopped the Pods as well as our cars and were ready to send them back to CT. Thankfully both the moving Pods and the 18 wheeler carrying our vehicles had to complete the trip down before turning back which allowed us time to try and sort everything out.

Thanks in large part to both realtors, the previous owner, and the additional time we were able to resolve the issues and still close a few days later.

We are grateful to say that we just closed on the house in St. Augustine and thanks to Stacey and her small group from Good News Church, we are all moved in. We are so fortunate to have already connected with a church and some incredible people in our community. A special shout out to Carter, Tim, Chad and Conner for help with the heavy lifting. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

Often it is when we are so close to the finish line that fear, doubt, anxiety and worry make us question our path or journey. We stop and turn back or worse, we give up on that dream or vision when all we had to do was get up one more time and drive the ball into the end zone, where victory awaits.

Sometimes God has something better in store for us, we just need to trust, listen, feel and believe it will happen and then take massive action.

Don’t let fear hold you back from pursuing your goals or dreams!

  1. Your story is very inspirational. Sounds like when you take a leap of faith, it really paid off.
I also have a similar exPerience. I quit my job and going back to school after 27 years , no spring chicken but I am finally going after a career that I am passionate about- home care for Seniors.
    God bless!๐Ÿค—

    • Thank you Tracy for your kind words, truly grateful! Congrats on leaving your job and leveling up! It takes more courage than most people think to do what you are doing. Your heart will always lead you in the right direction. You already did the hard part which was pivot towards that direction. Your love and passion will do the rest! Know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers this week. Godspeed!

  2. We move in the next week and Iโ€™m terrified!! Even though we do it all the time.
But youโ€™re right- you face those challenges head on, as a team, and everything will turn out just as itโ€™s supposed to.

    • Good luck with your movie Maggie! You and your family have been in our thoughts and prayers. Please reach out if you need anything. I know you were a tremendous support during our move and we are forever grateful. Look forward to connecting in the near future.

  3. Joe very inspirational. So glad to hear Sandyโ€™s doing better. God has plans for all of us and so happy he has guided you and your family to a wonderful place like St. Augustine. Canโ€™t wait to see you all.
    Love, Mom

  4. Joe and Sandy welcome to Florida. Although you are many miles north of us, St Augustine is a nice place. We have been there many times over the last 30 years. Good luck in your new home and God bless you and your family. Almost Aunt Patti.

    • Thank you for your kind words! God bless you and your family as well. Hope to see you more often now that we’re down here ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Hey Joe, Sandy and kids, welcome to florida, thought you were going to say you moved here to be near your uncle Mike and aunt Donna.
    You made the right decision
    UM

    • Thanks UM, much appreciated! It definitely feels like we made the right decision. Thank you for all your support, especially leading up to our move. Truly grateful!

  6. Good luck on your continued journey! Thank you for writing your post. For me and my family, it was exactly what we needed to hear today. Prayers out to your wife for continued strength. From another autoimmune sufferer, she is so brave to make a decision to take care of herself. It is hard when your a mom and a wife, your instinct is to think of others before yourself. Sharing your families story really gave us hope that we needed today. Thank you for being brave and sharing ๐Ÿ˜Š

    • Thank you for sharing Jennifer! Your description sounds exactly how she feels, especially with regards to taking care of others before herself. I know a lot of times us guys think we are the strong ones but it is often the mother’s of our children who suffer and do so quietly as to not burden others. You are all super-women in my eyes and your strength is something I appreciate more and more with each day. Truly grateful for sharing and your kind words.
